Roadlab has been trusted with the material success of South Africa's largest and most innovative renewable energy projects and dozens of large-scale solar and wind farms nationwide.
30km east of Postmasburg, Northern Cape
The Redstone CSP Tower is sub-Saharan Africa’s first CSP molten salt tower.
At R11.6 billion, the Redstone project is the largest renewable energy investment in South Africa, and the project’s electricity price is the lowest of any South African solar thermal project.
Project Information
Located in the Humansrus Solar Park in the Northern Cape Province, the Redstone project is in close proximity to the 96MW Jasper and the 75MW Lesedi photovoltaic (PV) solar power projects developed by SolarReserve.
The three projects together become the first combined CSP and PV solar park in the world, with a total generating capacity of 271MW.
It is second in size only to Morocco’s 150MW NOOR III CSP.
World-class Technology
The project will feature ThermaVault technology, which will combine the solar thermal technology with molten salt energy storage technology.
This key technology will enable the Redstone power station to deliver 100 megawatts of non-intermittent clean energy to the South African grid, especially during peak periods – day and night.
This technology solves important intermittency issues experienced with other renewable energy solutions and is dispatchable 24/7, allowing the Redstone project to generate more than 480,000 megawatt-hours per year.
This annual output is more than twice that of other technologies per MW of capacity, such as photovoltaics (PV) or direct steam solar thermal.
Impact and Timeline
The project will reach close to 44% local content on procurement during the construction period and create more than 2,000 construction jobs at peak. 400 of these jobs will be from the local community and 100 will be permanent direct jobs during the operating period.
Commencement of operations is scheduled for Q4 2023 and and is expected to have an operational life of more than 30 years.
